The LT-40 light tank is one of the lesser-known, yet all the more fascinating, armored vehicles of Czechoslovak design. LT-40: The Tank Originally Destined for Lithuania
The LT-40 was developed by the Czechoslovak company ČKD as a variant of a design originally intended for the Lithuanian Army. However, following the Soviet occupation of Lithuania, ČKD could no longer complete the original order as planned, and the unfinished vehicles eventually found their way to Slovakia. At the time, the Slovak Army was looking for ways to modernize its armored units, and the LT-40 offered an interesting solution.
The original design called for a 20 mm Oerlikon cannon. However, the Slovaks requested more powerful armament, so the designers fitted the modified turret with a 37 mm Škoda A7 cannon, the same gun used on the LT vz. 38. This change required modifications to the turret.
The first vehicles arrived in the Slovak Army in a provisional configuration and received their complete armament only later. The LT-40 thus entered service as an interesting compromise between the original export design and the requirements of the Slovak Army.
ČKD produced a total of 21 LT-40 tanks. But their story was far from over. The Slovak Army deployed them on the Eastern Front, where the LT-40s saw action in areas including Ukraine and the Caucasus. After returning to Slovakia, the vehicles underwent repairs, and they soon found themselves caught up in the dramatic events of 1944.
LT-40 in the Service of the Insurgents
On 29 August 1944, the Slovak National Uprising broke out. The insurgent forces rose against the German occupation and the regime that collaborated with Nazi Germany. Banská Bystrica became the center of the uprising, while fighting gradually spread across a large part of central Slovakia.
And it was here that the LT-40 gained another remarkable chapter in its history.
Several surviving LT-40s were taken over by the insurgent forces and immediately sent into combat. The light tank, originally developed for a foreign customer, thus found itself at the heart of one of the most significant armed uprisings against Nazi Germany in what was then Slovakia.
The insurgents used the LT-40s throughout the fighting and during their retreat into the mountainous regions. After the uprising was suppressed, the Germans captured some of the surviving vehicles, and the Wehrmacht subsequently put them back into service.
The small tank thus became a true veteran, serving with several different users and taking part in various stages of the Second World War. For a vehicle of which the designers produced just 21 examples, the LT-40 certainly had an exceptionally eventful combat career.
