During the Second World War, the British Army used a wide range of armoured reconnaissance vehicles. Humber Light Reconnaissance Car
The Humber LRC was developed as a light armoured reconnaissance vehicle. The British Army introduced it into service in 1940, and its design incorporated components from vehicles produced by the Rootes Group. The designers focused primarily on mobility, reliability, and suitability for reconnaissance units.
The Humber was not intended to engage enemy tanks. Crews used it mainly for reconnaissance, liaison duties, and supporting reconnaissance units. Thanks to its compact dimensions, the vehicle could operate effectively across a variety of terrain, while its armament provided the crew with adequate protection during reconnaissance missions.
An important part of the vehicle’s equipment was the wireless set, which allowed the crew to maintain communication with command posts and other vehicles within the unit.
Production of the Humber LRC ran from 1940 to 1943, with more than 3,600 vehicles of various versions leaving the factories. The Mk I, Mk II, and Mk III variants were developed successively. Later versions featured a fully enclosed hull and four-wheel drive. Some variants were also equipped with a turret mounting a Bren machine gun.
The Humber LRC saw service on several battlefronts during the Second World War. British units deployed it in North Africa, Italy, and later in Western Europe. The vehicle was also used by soldiers from other Allied armies, including Czechoslovak units.
The Humber in Service with the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Armoured Brigade
The 1st Czechoslovak Independent Armoured Brigade was one of the most important Czechoslovak units fighting on the Western Front. In 1944, it took part in operations in north-western Europe and, from the autumn of 1944 until the end of the war, participated in the siege of the German garrison at Dunkirk.
The brigade also included a reconnaissance squadron, which operated Humber Light Reconnaissance Cars, as well as M5 Stuart light tanks and other reconnaissance vehicles.
The Humber therefore makes an interesting addition to the more commonly modelled Czechoslovak Cromwells, Shermans, and Stuarts. It also gives modellers the opportunity to recreate a less frequently depicted aspect of the equipment used by Czechoslovak forces on the Western Front.
